Scholarship Program

The Tara Hughes Memorial Scholarship

In memory of our friend and fellow dancer Tara Hughes, we offer a yearly scholarship to I *Heart* Balboa.  This scholarship is for a dancer who is especially thoughtful & kind, has gone out of their way to help someone in need, or who has made a difference in the lives of others in their community. Rather than applying for this scholarship for yourself, we are asking the community to nominate someone who embodies the qualities we all loved so much in Tara.

What will scholarship recipient(s) receive?

- a pass to the event

- one private lesson with the instructor of their choice

- a $150 cash stipend to use for travel costs or more private lessons, as they choose

How are recipients selected?

The staff of I ♥ Bal select a scholarship recipient by reading what you write about the nominees and voting for entries using a ranked-choice system.

To make it as fair as possible, and to avoid any bias, all identifying info (names of nominee/ nominator/dance scenes/events) is redacted before the staff reviews the applications.  This allows the staff to evaluate the applications blind. (It also means that what you write about your nominee is really important!).  Only the event coordinator, Erica, has access to the identifying info and she doesn't get a vote.

 Nominations are now closed
Last day to nominate a dancer was June 10th, 2023

We will select a recipient by late June 2023
